LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Judge Steven Meyer was shot inside his own home Sunday afternoon after a stranger came knocking with a chilling claim that quickly turned violent. The shooting left Meyer and his wife, Kimberly Meyer, injured and shaken, sending a wave of concern through the quiet Lafayette neighborhood.
Police were called to the 1700 block of Mill Pond Lane around 2:17 p.m. after a 911 call first came in under unclear circumstances. Within moments, as more information reached dispatchers, the call was upgraded to a reported shooting. Additional police units rushed to the scene.

When officers arrived, they found two gunshot victims inside the residence — one man and one woman. Emergency medical crews moved fast, giving aid at the scene before transporting both victims to a local hospital for treatment.
Authorities later confirmed that both Judge Meyer and his wife were listed in stable condition. Investigators said the judge suffered a gunshot wound to the arm. Details about Kimberly Meyer’s injuries were not fully disclosed, but police confirmed she was also struck during the incident.
According to investigators, the shooting began at the front door. The male victim told officers he heard a knock and went to answer. A voice outside allegedly said, “We have your dog.” Almost immediately after those words, a shot was fired through the door, striking him.
Police recovered a spent shotgun shell on the front porch, underscoring just how close and sudden the attack was. Detectives sealed off the area for hours as they collected evidence and worked to piece together what led up to the shooting.
Property records show the home is associated with Kimberly Meyer, and police later confirmed the injured couple’s identities. Officers emphasized that this was not a random call gone wrong but an active investigation into a targeted and disturbing act of violence.
As of the latest update, no suspects have been identified and no arrests have been made. Police have not released a possible motive and say the investigation remains wide open. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Lafayette Police Department as detectives continue searching for answers.
