The quiet stretch of Fayette County turned tragic Tuesday evening when a routine drive ended in a fatal collision that is now at the center of a criminal case. Authorities say Tonya Hedrick is facing a serious charge after a crash that claimed a life and left multiple others injured along a busy roadway.
It happened around 7:30 p.m. on March 31, near the intersection of Glen Ferris Loop and U.S. Route 60. According to investigators, an SUV entered the highway and collided directly with a westbound Jeep. The impact was sudden and violent, leaving little room for either driver to avoid what was about to unfold.

A witness on scene described a split-second moment that changed everything. The SUV, they said, pulled straight into the Jeep’s path, giving the approaching driver almost no time to react. Within seconds, the vehicles slammed into each other, sending debris across the road and drawing immediate attention from nearby motorists.
Emergency crews responded quickly, working under pressure to stabilize the injured. A passenger from the SUV was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Despite efforts to save them, that individual later died from their injuries. Others involved in the crash, including occupants of the Jeep, were also taken for medical treatment, though officials have not shared updates on their conditions.
As the situation unfolded, deputies began to notice signs that raised concern. While receiving treatment, Hedrick reportedly had a visible white powdery substance in her nostril. That observation prompted further investigation into possible impairment at the time of the crash.
Authorities proceeded with field sobriety testing and later secured a warrant to obtain a blood sample. The results of those tests are expected to play a key role in determining what led to the deadly outcome on that stretch of road.
Hedrick has since been charged with DUI causing death, a felony offense. She is currently being held at Southern Regional Jail as the case moves forward. Meanwhile, investigators continue to piece together the full sequence of events, searching for answers in a tragedy that has left one family grieving and a community shaken.
