In Pageland, South Carolina, a close‑knit small town now grappling with heartbreak, 16‑year‑old Zaden C. Bratsos died after being shot on the night of March 28. Deputies from the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office found him with a gunshot wound near North Pearl Street just after 9 p.m. He was rushed to a hospital in Monroe, North Carolina, but did not survive. The death has left neighbors shocked and families mourning.
Days later, 17‑year‑old Jeremiah J. Lockhart, also of Pageland, surrendered himself to authorities. He was taken into custody without incident and charged with murder and possessing a weapon during a violent crime. Lockhart is now held at the Chesterfield County Detention Center as the case moves forward in court.

Officials say the shooting scene was actually a short distance from where Bratsos was found, near CW Baker Circle, and that several people were around when the shots were fired. Investigators have not disclosed what sparked the confrontation, and they are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Sheriff Cambo Streater described the work of law enforcement as tireless, saying officers followed tips and leads from residents to help identify and locate Lockhart. “This case has weighed heavily on our community,” he said, offering condolences to the Bratsos family as they deal with unimaginable loss.
Friends and classmates of Zaden have shared memories of his laughter and presence at local hangouts, painting a picture of a boy with deep ties to his community. In the days since his death, tributes have sprung up near the site where he was found, with candles and notes left by those grieving.
Lockhart’s arrest marks an early chapter in what promises to be a complex legal process. Prosecutors have not released additional details about a motive or whether others will face charges. Both sides now prepare for court proceedings as Pageland seeks answers and closure.
For the Bratsos family and many in this rural community, there are more questions than answers, and a palpable sense of loss that will take time to heal.
