A quiet Monday evening in LaGrange turned tragic when a 26‑year‑old mother of two and an 18‑year‑old man were killed in a shooting that has shaken their community. The incident unfolded about 5:35 p.m. at the Cameron Crossing apartments on Meadow Terrace, when LaGrange police responded to reports of gunfire in a parking area.
Officers arriving on the scene found Jakhala Moss unresponsive in the lot with at least one gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after emergency personnel arrived. Witnesses told officers there could be another victim inside Moss’s apartment. Responding units located 18‑year‑old Jamarcus Kennedy inside, suffering from a gunshot wound after apparently trying to escape the gunfire. He, too, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators believe the attack was deliberate. Police say two male suspects approached the building on foot, opened fire on Moss and Kennedy, then fled the area. Kennedy had managed to reach the safety of the apartment before collapsing. As of this writing, no one has been arrested and the suspects remain unidentified.
The LaGrange Police Department is urging anyone with information to come forward. Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage, talking to witnesses and working leads in hopes of finding those responsible. Law enforcement officials believe the shooting was not random and may be connected to other violence in the city.
Friends and family are reeling. Moss, remembered by those who knew her as a devoted mother and vibrant presence in her neighborhood, leaves behind her children and loved ones searching for answers. Kennedy’s death has also left a void among his circle of friends who say he was simply trying to get away from danger when he was struck.
Local leaders have called on the community to assist with tips, no matter how small, to help police make an arrest. Residents describe a city on edge, grappling with sorrow and a desire for justice after a senseless loss of life.
Police continue to treat the case as active and urge anyone with knowledge about the shooting to contact authorities. Detectives say any piece of information, including video or photos, could be critical to moving the investigation forward.
