Worth County Teacher Jim “Jimbo” Houston Dies After DUI Collision

Worth County, Georgia — The town is reeling after a beloved social studies teacher, Jim “Jimbo” Houston, 49, died following a late‑afternoon wreck on April 1. Houston was behind the wheel of his Chevrolet pickup on Highway 300 near the GA‑32 intersection around 4:30 p.m. when another vehicle struck him from behind. The crash forced his truck off the road and into a tree. He later died at a hospital from injuries sustained in the impact.

Hours after the collision, state troopers confirmed the other driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time. Police have charged that driver with misdemeanor DUI. Officials expect additional charges as the investigation unfolds.

Houston taught social studies at Worth County High School and had been a fixture in the classroom for more than two decades. He was known for sparking curiosity in history and for staying late to help students who struggled. Teachers described him as patient, upbeat, and the kind of teacher who made students feel seen.

On Thursday, the school district shared a message of sorrow and remembrance. Staff and students gathered in the hallways to place cards and flowers where Houston’s classroom once buzzed with discussion about civil rights and world history. Many wore pins with his nickname “Jimbo,” a sign of the fondness students held for him.

Friends and family said Houston lived for his students. He stayed after school for tutoring, led the history club, and often made time to talk one‑on‑one with teens who needed encouragement. Parents praised his ability to connect, saying many young people saw him as a mentor rather than just another teacher.

Officials with the Georgia State Patrol said the crash remains under review. They noted the dangerous combination of speed and alcohol was a likely factor but say final conclusions will wait on reports and testing.

In Worth County, the shock has turned to sadness. At the high school, teachers and students are trying to find a way forward while honoring a man they called an inspiration and a friend.
