HARRIS COUNTY: Mom of Two, Monae Brooks, Killed in Front of Her Children on Rusty Ridge Lane

On a quiet Wednesday morning in the Highland Creek Ranch neighborhood, a sudden and tragic confrontation ended with the death of 32‑year‑old Monae Brooks, a devoted mother of an 8‑year‑old daughter and a 4‑year‑old son. Brooks was fatally shot on Rusty Ridge Lane while her children and family dog were still in the car, a scene that has left her community shaken.

According to investigators, Brooks had called 911 earlier that morning to report a disturbing discovery — a bullet left on the hood of her vehicle. She spoke with law enforcement and later walked through the neighborhood with a handgun in her hand, prompting a neighbor to contact authorities. Surveillance video captured these moments before the incident escalated.

Later, as Brooks drove down a narrow stretch of Rusty Ridge Lane with her children and dog in the vehicle, she encountered a van pulling a trailer. The driver of the van stopped to allow her to pass. What followed was a tense interaction that escalated quickly. Brooks exited her vehicle and pulled a pistol from her car.

The other driver, also armed, responded by firing his weapon. Brooks was struck and collapsed at the scene. Bystanders rushed out after hearing gunshots to find her gasping for breath as her young children cried in the car, helpless and terrified. Emergency responders pronounced her dead at the scene.

Brooks’s mother later shared that her daughter had been struggling with her mental health in the days leading up to the shooting, adding a layer of heartbreak to an already devastating situation. After the shooting, Child Protective Services placed the children with family members to care for them.
Neighbors described Brooks as a loving mother and someone who brought joy to her family’s life. Her sudden death has left a void in the community and raised questions about how quickly ordinary moments can turn tragic.

As the investigation continues, authorities have not yet said whether charges will be filed in connection with the shooting. For those who knew her, Monae Brooks’ life will be remembered far beyond the circumstances of her death — as a mother, friend, and presence in her children’s lives, gone far too soon.
