The quiet stretch of Interstate 29 near Pony Creek turned tragic Thursday afternoon, when a crash claimed the life of 39-year-old Alex Foster Jr. of Omaha. What began as a routine drive ended in a violent sequence that left a community searching for answers.
Authorities say the crash happened just after 1:30 p.m. near the 45-mile marker. Investigators believe Foster was heading north when his vehicle suddenly veered out of its lane. In a matter of seconds, it crossed into the southbound side of the interstate and slammed into a bridge abutment with force.

The impact did not stop there. The vehicle continued off the roadway, tumbling down into Pony Creek, where it finally came to rest between the northbound and southbound bridges. The scene, according to first responders, was both difficult and dangerous to access.
Foster was the only person inside the vehicle. Emergency crews arrived quickly, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other injuries reported, and no additional vehicles were involved in the crash.
Officials say the vehicle was first spotted in the creek by the Iowa Department of Transportation. That discovery triggered a rapid emergency response, with portions of the interstate temporarily shut down as crews worked to secure the area and recover the vehicle.
Investigators are still working to determine what led to the crash. Early findings suggest speed may have been a factor, though authorities have not confirmed this. The Council Bluffs Police Department, along with other agencies, continues to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
For now, the loss of Alex Foster Jr. stands at the center of the story. A life cut short in an instant, on a road traveled by thousands every day, now marked by a moment that won’t soon be forgotten.
