Carencro Tragedy: Dalana Charlot Killed by Estranged Partner in Fatal Shooting

The quiet stretch of Maggie Lane near Carencro turned into a scene of heartbreak on Wednesday, when deputies say a woman’s life was cut short by someone she once trusted. Authorities identified the victim as 41-year-old Dalana Charlot. Investigators believe she was shot by her estranged partner, 33-year-old Raylon Wiltz, who then took his own life.

Deputies with the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported shooting at a residence in the unincorporated area. When they arrived, they found both Charlot and Wiltz dead inside the home. The initial findings point to a murder-suicide, with no indication that anyone else was involved.

What makes the case even more troubling is the history between the two. Court records show Charlot had taken steps to protect herself just weeks before her death. On January 30, she obtained a restraining order against Wiltz the same day he was arrested for simple battery. In her filing, she described a pattern of alarming behavior, including threats with a knife, signs of mental instability, and expressions of suicidal thoughts.

But that layer of protection did not last. The restraining order was dismissed in February after Charlot did not appear for a scheduled hearing. It remains unclear why she missed the court date, but that decision now sits at the center of a tragedy that might have unfolded differently.

Friends and loved ones are left trying to make sense of the loss. Many have taken to social media to remember Charlot as a woman full of warmth and generosity. She was described as someone who gave deeply to others, often putting people before herself.

One friend shared a message that captured the weight of the moment, mourning not just Charlot’s death but the impact on her children, who must now face life without their mother. The grief is raw, and the sense of injustice lingers among those who knew her best.

Authorities say the investigation is still ongoing, with autopsies expected to confirm the exact causes of death. For now, the focus remains on piecing together the final moments of a life that ended too soon, and the warning signs that came before it.
