The Joplin community is in mourning after the sudden and tragic death of 76‑year‑old Danny Dudley, who was struck and killed by a vehicle Thursday night near the intersection of 8th and Main Street.
Emergency crews were called to the scene just after 8:15 p.m. on April 2, when multiple 911 calls reported a vehicle‑versus‑pedestrian crash. Officers arriving on site found Dudley with severe injuries from the collision. First responders from the Joplin Police Department immediately began lifesaving measures while the Joplin Fire Department and M.E.T.S. Ambulance arrived to assist. Dudley was rushed to a local hospital with life‑threatening injuries, but despite the efforts of medical staff, he was later pronounced deceased.

A preliminary investigation by authorities indicates Dudley was not in a marked crosswalk when he attempted to cross Main Street. He was walking east to west across the four‑lane undivided roadway between 8th and 9th Streets at the time of the crash. The circumstances leading up to the collision are still under review as the investigation continues.
Dudley’s passing has deeply affected family, friends, and neighbors who remember him as a valued member of the community. His death has also reignited concerns about pedestrian safety in areas with heavy traffic, especially during evening hours when visibility is limited and roadways remain busy.
In response to the tragedy, the Joplin Police Department urged residents to exercise extreme caution when crossing streets and to use designated crosswalks or controlled intersections whenever possible to reduce the risk of serious injury or loss of life.
