Michigan State Police have taken over the investigation. Authorities said the case was transferred because of an affiliation between the victim’s family and the local police department, and investigators have not released any more details about a suspect, motive, or how the shooting unfolded.

Fruitport Community Schools confirmed Rylen’s identity Monday and described him as a student who brought joy and warmth to school life. Superintendent Jason Kennedy posted a message remembering Rylen’s kindness, his sense of humor and how easily he made others feel welcome. That same message said Rylen was creative, athletic and full of positive energy.

Friends and classmates arrived back at school this week in the shadow of tragedy. The district’s emotional support team met Sunday night and prepared counselors, social workers and support staff to help students and teachers cope with the loss. Officials have said support will be available throughout the week.

Parents and community members gathered in small, quiet groups Sunday evening, sharing memories of Rylen and offering comfort to one another. Many spoke about his welcoming nature and how he seemed to light up a room with laughter and friendliness.

Police continue to investigate, and no arrests have been made. Officials have asked anyone with information about the shooting to contact Michigan State Police as they work to piece together what led to this heartbreaking loss.

Counselors remain at Fruitport Middle School and across the district to help younger students understand and process the sudden tragedy. School leaders have urged families to talk with their children, hold them close, and support one another during this painful time.
