LEXINGTON, N.C.: Barbara Hartwell Killed in Winter Storm Crash That Skidded Off South Main Street

LEXINGTON, N.C. — The heart of this community is heavy after Barbara Hartwell, a longtime resident, was killed in a weather-related crash late Saturday night, police confirmed Tuesday. The tragedy unfolded just as icy conditions blanketed the area, turning a brisk winter evening into heartbreak for family, friends, and neighbors.

It was around 9 p.m. on January 24 when emergency responders were called to South Main Street near the railroad overpass at Wilfred Avenue. A vehicle traveling south lost control on slick pavement, left the road, and slid down a steep embankment. Authorities say that as the car came off the road, it struck Hartwell while she was walking on the sidewalk.

Two young passengers riding in the car were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, officials said. At the time of the crash, police reported that all occupants of the vehicle were accounted for, but due to treacherous conditions and the car’s location, crews could not immediately remove the wreckage.

Nearly thirteen hours later, around 10 a.m. on Sunday morning, officers returned to the scene after someone reported a body in the wooded area near the wreck. Hartwell was found down the embankment and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Friends and neighbors described Hartwell as someone who enjoyed her morning walks and knew many people in town. The sudden and violent nature of the crash has left her circle struggling to make sense of a life cut short in such unpredictable conditions.

Winter weather advisories had been in effect throughout the region that night, with temperatures dropping and icy patches forming on roads and sidewalks, making travel hazardous. The National Weather Service had warned of refreezing moisture creating slick spots that could catch drivers and pedestrians off guard.

Lexington police say the investigation is ongoing and that they are consulting with the District Attorney’s Office about possible charges in connection with the crash. Officials emphasize that icy roads and low visibility likely played a role in the incident but are still working to piece together the full picture.

The community has rallied around Hartwell’s family, sharing memories and urging residents to stay safe amid lingering winter weather conditions. Vigils and tributes have taken shape at spots around town where friends remember her smiling and greeting neighbors.
