Around 2:45 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, 2026, a quiet stretch of Alabama 5 south of Pine Hill became the scene of a tragedy that still has neighbors and law enforcement searching for answers. DeQuarius L. Pritchett, 32, of Arlington, was struck and killed by an unknown vehicle while he was walking along the roadway, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
State troopers responding to emergency calls found Pritchett lying in the road near mile marker 6, just about two miles south of Pine Hill’s city limits. Despite the swift arrival of first responders, he was declared dead at the scene before medical help could arrive.

Investigators with ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division say the vehicle that hit Pritchett did not stop. At this point, neither the car nor its driver has been identified. Troopers are following up on evidence collected at the scene — from vehicle debris to paint chips — hoping someone will recognize signs of recent damage.
Officials have not yet explained why Pritchett was in the middle of the highway so late at night. That part of Alabama 5 is poorly lit after dark, and troopers suggest limited visibility could have played a role in the deadly crash. They are working to piece together the moments leading up to the impact.
ALEA is urging anyone who traveled that road early Sunday morning to think back on what they saw or heard. Troopers ask motorists who might have noticed a damaged vehicle recently to come forward with even small details, which could be crucial to identifying the driver who fled.
This hit‑and‑run adds to the tragic list of traffic deaths in Alabama, as officials remind drivers and pedestrians alike to stay alert on dark rural roads. Troopers also stressed the importance of stopping after a crash — no matter the circumstances — to help prevent further loss of life.
Pritchett’s passing has left a community looking for closure and answers. For now, troopers continue their search and ask for the public’s assistance. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact ALEA troopers at (334) 675‑0204.
