Rankin County, Miss. — A quiet stretch of Monterey Road turned into a scene of tragedy Friday afternoon when a family dispute over land ended in gunfire and three deaths.
Walter Birdsong, 62, and Amanda Birdsong, 43, were identified as the two victims killed in the shooting. Both were found by deputies after emergency calls came in shortly before 4 p.m. reporting gunfire at a property in the 1400 block.

Authorities say the situation unfolded quickly. When deputies arrived, they discovered Walter and Amanda suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. The scene was immediately secured as responders worked to understand what had happened inside the family conflict.
Investigators later found 56-year-old Kurt Birdsong, also part of the same family, dead from what officials described as an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. His body was located after the initial response to the shooting scene.
Law enforcement believes the violence stemmed from a long-running dispute over land ownership within the family. Officials have not released further details about what specifically triggered the confrontation that day.
The Rankin County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate, speaking with witnesses and gathering evidence to piece together the final moments leading up to the shooting.
For those close to the family, the shock has been overwhelming. What was once a private disagreement over property has now become a permanent loss that has left relatives and neighbors struggling to make sense of it all.
The community remains unsettled as word spreads through the area, with many expressing grief over how quickly the situation escalated into irreversible tragedy.
