Lancaster is holding its breath as a local teenager fights for his life in a Madison hospital bed. The 17-year-old boy was behind the wheel of a heavy-duty pickup truck during a horrific accident early Sunday morning. While he survived the initial impact, the crash turned out to be a double tragedy that cost his passenger, Katy Ann Schaefer, her life.
The wreck happened out in the countryside of Grant County near Elbow Township. The teen was driving an older Ford F350 eastbound when he lost control of the vehicle. It was a chaotic scene as the truck hit the edge of the road, jerked across the lanes, and slammed into a ditch. The force of the truck hitting the embankment sent it into a series of violent rolls.

Investigators say the crash was so powerful that the teen was thrown clear of the vehicle. When the dust settled, he was left with life-threatening injuries. Emergency crews realized immediately that he needed specialized care that only the big hospital in Madison could provide. A flight team was called in to airlift him from the rural crash site.
While the medical teams worked on the driver, they found Katy Ann Schaefer near the wreckage. The 26-year-old from Montfort had also been ejected from the passenger seat. Despite the best efforts of everyone on the scene, her injuries were just too much to survive. She was pronounced dead right there on Buckwheat Ridge Road.
The Sheriff’s Office has been working overtime to figure out what led to the truck leaving the road in the first place. They are looking closely at how fast the truck was going before it hit the dirt. It is a long process to reconstruct a crash this bad, and they kept the road blocked off for a big chunk of Sunday to get the measurements they needed.
Back in Lancaster and Montfort, the mood is incredibly somber. It is a small-town nightmare to have a young driver in critical condition and another young person gone forever. Everyone knows everyone in these parts, so the pain ripples through the schools and the local hangouts. People are just waiting for any update on the boy’s condition.
The investigation is still wide open as the deputies wait for more evidence to come in. They are trying to be as thorough as possible for the sake of everyone involved. As the teen continues his battle in the hospital, two towns are left mourning a loss and hoping for a miracle, all while trying to make sense of a terrible Sunday morning.
