SAGINAW, Mich.: Community Grieves After Jose Barrera, 41, Fatally Shot Near 12th and Janes

Saginaw woke up Tuesday to heartbreaking news: Jose Barrera, a 41-year-old city resident, was found dead from a gunshot wound at the corner of North 12th Street and Janes Street early that morning. Police and investigators have since classified his death as a homicide, and a suspect is now in custody.

Emergency crews were called to the scene just before 6 a.m. after Central Dispatch received a 911 call. The line stayed open, and dispatchers could hear someone stop breathing before officers reached the block in north Saginaw. When police arrived, they found Barrera suffering from an apparent gunshot injury. Despite efforts from first responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives from the Michigan State Police Saginaw Major Crimes Unit took the lead on the investigation, and crime lab teams have been combing the snowy neighborhood for clues. Officers asked residents and passersby to avoid the area as they processed evidence and worked to piece together what happened.

Law enforcement confirmed a suspect has been arrested, though officials have not yet released details about that person’s identity or possible motive. Police said there’s no threat to the public at this time as the investigation continues.

Friends and neighbors described Barrera as a familiar face in his community, someone who had ties across Saginaw’s neighborhoods. His sudden death has left families and local residents grappling with shock and sadness, with many expressing how hard it is to lose a life in such a violent way, especially so early in the year.

Detective Sergeant Oscar Lopez, speaking for the police department, offered condolences to Barrera’s loved ones and reaffirmed a commitment to a thorough investigation as details unfold. Authorities say they want anyone with information, no matter how small, to come forward to help bring clarity to the case.

As the community mourns and the snow continues to fall on quiet streets where Barrera’s life ended, police remind residents that tips can be made anonymously through Crime Stoppers or by contacting the Saginaw Police Department at 989-759-1245.
