Hunter Blake Patterson, Callahan County: Beloved Firefighter and Friend Killed in Horrific ATV Crash

The small town of Callahan County is reeling tonight after losing two bright lights in a split second. Hunter Blake Patterson, 31, a dedicated firefighter from Abilene, and his buddy Brett Cole Underwood, 29, from Clyde, were killed in a brutal ATV accident early Friday morning. The tragedy happened just as the weekend was kicking off, around 1 a.m. on State Highway 36, near County Road 228.

Patterson and Underwood were riding together on an ATV that had rolled onto the highway from a nearby field. Witnesses say the ATV was heading south when a car slammed into it from behind. The force of the crash sent the ATV flying off the road, flipping over, and bursting into flames. Both men were thrown from the vehicle and died instantly from their injuries. The driver of the car walked away without a scratch.

The Abilene Fire Department is shattered. In a heartfelt statement, they called the loss “a devastating blow to our department and the whole community.” Patterson wasn’t just a firefighter—he was a pillar in his neighborhood, known for his quick smile and even quicker response time when emergencies called. Underwood, his best friend, was the kind of guy who’d light up a room with his humor and loyalty.

Neighbors and fellow firefighters are struggling to come to terms with the suddenness of it all. “Hunter was the kind of guy who’d give you the shirt off his back,” said one coworker. “Brett was always cracking jokes, even in the toughest situations. This just doesn’t feel real.”

The Texas Department of Public Safety is still piecing together what happened. Right now, they’re keeping details close to the vest, but one thing’s clear: this was a night that changed everything for two families and a town that’s now holding each other a little tighter.
