Brett Dixon, Elizabeth, Indiana: A Son Who Prayed for His Sick Dad Became His Father’s Last Victim

Not long ago, Brett Dixon took to social media to ask for prayers for his dad. Paul Dixon had just started chemotherapy, and Brett — his only son — called him his “world” and his “best friend.” He wanted folks to rally around his family during a frightening time. Nobody could have ever guessed that the man he loved most in this world would be the one to take his life.

On the evening of May 13, deputies from the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department rolled up to a residence on Greenbrier Road SE in Elizabeth, Indiana, just after 7:25 p.m. in response to a welfare check. The call had come from Ray Dixon, Paul’s brother all the way down in Mississippi, who said Paul had reached out to him earlier that day and expressed suicidal thoughts. What those deputies found when they arrived was nothing short of devastating.

Brett Dixon, 36, was found dead right there on the front porch — shot twice, once in the chest and once in the head. He didn’t even make it inside. When investigators pushed through the front door, they found two more bodies. Melissa Cochran Dixon, 59, was dead from a single gunshot wound to the head. And Paul Dixon, 61, lay dead from what investigators determined was a self-inflicted gunshot wound, also to the head. Three lives — gone, all in one house.

Detectives pieced together the evidence and concluded that Paul Dixon was responsible for shooting both Brett and Melissa before turning the gun on himself. There is no suspect at large, and authorities say the community faces no ongoing threat. But that does little to ease the grief of those left behind.

What makes this story hit even harder is what Brett had posted just a year prior. While his father was fighting cancer and going through chemotherapy, Brett was publicly cheering him on, calling him his best friend, and asking the world to send prayers their way. He stood by his dad through one of the darkest chapters of that man’s life. And then, in a cruel and heartbreaking twist, that same man — reportedly still battling illness — became the person who shot him dead on his own front porch.

Friends and family were absolutely blindsided. Social media lit up with an outpouring of shock, grief, and confusion. People who knew the Dixons couldn’t wrap their heads around what had happened. Loved ones of the family also called out for prayers for the extended family, all of whom are now left trying to make sense of something that defies all understanding.

The Harrison County Sheriff, Nick Smith, addressed the tragedy in a public statement, saying, “This incident is a tragic loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family, extended family, and friends of those involved.” Autopsies for all three victims have been scheduled, and the investigation remains ongoing. For a small, tight-knit community like Elizabeth, Indiana, the wounds from this tragedy are going to take a very long time to heal.
