FRISCO, Texas — A small North Texas community is reeling after the loss of two vibrant 16‑year‑old friends in a tragic sledding accident during icy winter weather. Gracie Brito, a sophomore at Wakeland High School, died Wednesday, days after being critically injured in a sled crash that also claimed the life of her best friend, Elizabeth “Lizzie” Angle.
It was a Sunday afternoon that should have been filled with simple winter fun. Gracie and Lizzie were riding on a plastic sled being pulled by a Jeep Wrangler driven by a 16‑year‑old boy near Majestic Gardens Drive and Killian Court, according to Frisco police. The icy street, coated by a rare North Texas winter storm, turned a carefree moment into catastrophe when the sled struck a curb and slammed into a tree.

Emergency crews arrived quickly and performed life‑saving efforts at the scene before rushing both girls to a local hospital. Lizzie, known for her soccer talent and bright personality, was pronounced dead shortly after the accident. Gracie remained in critical condition for days before her passing was confirmed by Wakeland High School officials.
Friends and neighbors left flowers, notes and ribbons at the crash site, a quiet marker of loss in a normally bustling neighborhood. Gracie was remembered as a dedicated student, cheerleader and beloved classmate. Lizzie was celebrated as a gifted soccer player with a warm spirit and ambitions that stretched far into the future.
At school, faculty and students are still in shock. Wakeland High officials said they will honor both girls during second period when classes resume and have counselors available for students and staff struggling with grief. The school community has been left searching for comfort after losing not one, but two peers in such sudden and heartbreaking circumstances.
Authorities say the investigation is ongoing, with the Denton County District Attorney’s Office assisting Frisco police to determine whether any criminal charges will be filed in connection with the crash. No arrests have been reported so far.
Families of Gracie and Lizzie have been surrounded by support from classmates, coaches and community members. In statements shared through relatives, both girls are celebrated not just for their accomplishments, but for the kindness and light they brought to those around them — reminders of how fragile and precious life truly is.
The Frisco Police Department urges anyone with information related to the incident to reach out to investigators.
