Flowood, Miss., Tanner Strickland, 20: A Young Man From Yazoo County Who Never Made It Home Sunday Night

It was supposed to be just another Sunday evening ride. Instead, Highway 25 in Flowood, Mississippi, became the last road Tanner Strickland ever traveled. The 20-year-old from Yazoo County lost his life in a violent motorcycle crash at approximately 7:13 p.m. on May 17, and the community he left behind is still trying to make sense of it all. He was just a kid, barely into adulthood, and now he’s gone — just like that.

Flowood Police Department officers were called out to the stretch of Highway 25 near Jackson Preparatory School after reports came in of a serious traffic collision. What they found when they arrived was a scene nobody ever wants to respond to. A motorcycle had slammed hard into the rear of a vehicle that was sitting completely still at a red light. The impact was catastrophic. First responders rushed to Strickland’s side and did everything they could to save him, but the injuries he sustained in that collision were simply too severe. He was pronounced dead right there at the scene.

There was nothing freak or random about the conditions that night — no fog, no reported road hazard, no sudden event that pushed Tanner into danger. The car ahead of him was stopped, waiting like it was supposed to. Something went wrong in those final seconds before impact, and investigators are now working to figure out exactly what that was. The Flowood Police Department has confirmed the case remains an active and ongoing investigation.

Rankin County Chief Deputy Coroner Clifton Dunlap formally identified the victim the following Monday as Tanner Strickland, age 20, of Yazoo County. That’s when it became official — when a name got attached to the tragedy, and families and friends who had been quietly hoping for different news had their worst fears confirmed. Twenty years old. A whole life stretched out in front of him, and now it’s over.

The driver of the other vehicle — the one sitting legally at that red light — has not been publicly identified. Authorities have made no indication that the driver faces any charges or even played an active role in what happened. They were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, or more accurately, the right place at exactly the wrong moment. That’s the brutal randomness of these kinds of crashes.

Motorcycle fatalities are a grim and recurring reality on Mississippi roads, and Highway 25 has seen its share of tragedy over the years. But statistics don’t mean much when it’s a 20-year-old kid from your county who isn’t coming home. Every number in those reports was once somebody’s son, somebody’s friend, somebody’s neighbor — and Tanner Strickland was all of those things to the people who knew him.

The Flowood Police Department has not indicated when they expect to wrap up their investigation or whether any findings will lead to further action. What is certain is that a young man who rode out on a spring Sunday evening never got to ride back. And for everyone who cared about Tanner Strickland, that is a grief that no investigation report, no press release, and no official statement will ever fully address. He deserved more road ahead of him. He deserved to make it home.
