Alana Duck, Jackson: A 19-Year-Old Girl Was Sitting in a Parked Car When the Bullets Started Flying

A night that was supposed to end with music and good times turned into a nightmare outside a Jackson, Mississippi nightclub in the early hours of Saturday morning. One young woman is dead, two others are wounded, and a community is once again asking how something like this keeps happening. The Jackson Police Department confirmed the shooting took place around 1:00 a.m. on May 17, right outside The Hideaway nightclub on the 5100 block of I-55 North — a stretch of road most folks around here know well.

Alana Duck, just 19 years old and from Brandon, Mississippi, was found inside a black Honda Accord parked in the lot outside the club. She had been shot in the upper body. First responders rushed her to the hospital for emergency treatment, but the young woman never made it through. Hinds County Coroner Jeramiah Howard officially identified her as the victim. Nineteen years old. A whole life ahead of her. Gone before sunrise.

What makes this story gut-wrenching is how innocent her position was in all of it. Alana wasn’t in the middle of a fight. She was sitting in a car — a parked car — while chaos erupted around her in that parking lot. A physical confrontation between several males had broken out, and at some point, guns came out and shots were exchanged. Alana was caught right in the middle of it, and she paid the ultimate price for something she had absolutely no part in starting.

Two other people were also struck by gunfire during the same incident. Both were loaded into AMR ambulances and rushed to local hospitals, where they are currently receiving medical treatment. Police have not released any updates on their conditions, so it’s unclear tonight just how serious their injuries are. What is clear is that at least three people walked out of that parking lot wounded — and one of them didn’t walk out at all.

Investigators arrived on the scene and immediately began combing through the parking lot for evidence. Witness statements are being gathered. Surveillance footage is being reviewed. Detectives are working overtime to piece together exactly how the confrontation started and who was responsible for pulling the trigger. As of now, no arrests have been made, and police haven’t publicly named any suspects in the case.

The Hideaway sits in a busy commercial corridor along I-55 North, and shootings in and around Jackson nightlife spots have been an ongoing concern for residents and city officials alike. This shooting adds another painful chapter to that conversation. A teenager from Brandon, just trying to have a night out, is now the face of yet another preventable tragedy in a city that has seen far too many of them.

Jackson Police are urging anyone who was in or around that parking lot in the early hours of Saturday morning to come forward with anything they know. Tips could be the difference between justice for Alana Duck and another unsolved case file gathering dust. Her family deserves answers. Her community deserves better. And whoever is responsible for firing those shots needs to be held fully accountable for what they took from this world when they pulled that trigger.
