Nasir Best, Washington DC: Bystander Dies After Gunfire Erupts Near White House

Panic swept across downtown Washington, D.C., Saturday evening after a young gunman opened fire near a security checkpoint close to the White House, leaving an innocent bystander dead and throwing one of the country’s most protected areas into chaos. Federal authorities identified the suspect as 21-year-old Nasir Best, a man investigators said had a troubling history of erratic behavior and repeated encounters with law enforcement around the White House grounds.

According to officials, the shooting unfolded shortly after 6 p.m. near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, just steps from the White House complex while President Donald Trump was inside the building. Witnesses described hearing a rapid burst of gunfire that sent reporters, tourists, and nearby workers scrambling for cover. Secret Service officers immediately locked down the area as frightened people rushed into nearby buildings.

Investigators said Best approached a security checkpoint carrying a bag before suddenly pulling out a firearm and opening fire on officers stationed at the post. Secret Service agents quickly returned fire, striking the suspect during the exchange. Authorities later confirmed that Best died after being transported to a nearby hospital.

A bystander caught in the middle of the shooting was also struck by gunfire. Officials initially described the victim’s condition as critical, but later reports confirmed the person had died from the injuries. Investigators are still working to determine whether the fatal shot came from the suspect or during the return fire from officers.

Law enforcement sources said Best had previously drawn attention from authorities because of disturbing behavior near the White House. Court records reportedly showed he had once claimed he was Jesus Christ and wanted to be arrested. Officials also said he had previously been involuntarily committed and later arrested after entering restricted areas near White House security checkpoints.

Journalists working outside the White House during the incident described terrifying moments as shots rang through the area. Some reporters dropped to the ground while others sprinted toward the press briefing room after Secret Service agents ordered everyone to take cover immediately. Videos from the scene quickly spread online showing confusion and fear unfolding in real time.

Federal investigators, including the FBI and Secret Service, continue examining the motive behind the shooting. Officials have not announced whether the attack was politically motivated, but the incident has renewed concerns about growing violence near government institutions and the increasing security threats surrounding the White House.
