Kencerio Walker, Burke County: Graduation celebration ends in heartbreaking crash after tree crushes family car

What was supposed to be one of the happiest weekends of their lives turned into a nightmare on a dark stretch of highway in Burke County, Georgia.

Just days after proudly walking across the stage at Swainsboro High School, 18-year-old Kencerio Walker and his girlfriend, Nykeria Laniya Johnson, were killed Saturday night when a massive tree suddenly fell across Highway 56 South. Kencerio’s father, James Walker, also died in the crash, leaving an entire community stunned and grieving.

Authorities said the tragedy happened around 9:05 p.m., about a half-mile south of Pine Hill Church Road. Investigators believe the large tree crashed down across both lanes of traffic before striking two vehicles traveling along the highway.

Deputies said a black Jeep Cherokee was hit first. The 18-year-old driver survived with only minor injuries and was taken for medical treatment. But on the opposite side of the tree, a Ford Taurus carrying the Walker family suffered devastating damage. Emergency crews later found the driver and two passengers trapped inside the vehicle.

All three victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

Friends and relatives later confirmed the victims were Kencerio Walker, his girlfriend Nykeria, and Kencerio’s father James Walker. Loved ones said the family had been returning home from Augusta after celebrating the young couple’s graduation from Swainsboro High School.

The sudden loss shook people across Swainsboro almost immediately. Many classmates had spent the week celebrating graduation milestones with Kencerio and Nykeria. By Sunday morning, social media was flooded with emotional tributes, graduation photos, and memories from friends who still could not believe the pair were gone.

School officials confirmed that both teenagers were members of the graduating Class of 2026. They described them as bright young people whose futures had only just begun. James Walker was also remembered by community members as a caring father who had proudly supported his son through graduation week.

A candlelight vigil was organized at Swainsboro High School as classmates, teachers, relatives, and neighbors prepared to gather in memory of the three victims. Many residents described the tragedy as one of the most painful losses the town has experienced in years.

Investigators continue working to determine exactly what caused the tree to collapse onto the roadway. Authorities have not released additional details, but the crash remains under active investigation as grieving families try to process the unimaginable loss.
