The family of 18-year-old Gatlok “Gattie” Nguany is mourning a heartbreaking loss after the teen was fatally stabbed early Sunday morning in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Police said the attack happened just after midnight near Goodrich Avenue SW and Cesar E. Chavez Avenue SW on the city’s southwest side.
Nguany had recently graduated from Morley Stanwood High School and was out with friends at the time of the stabbing. According to family members, the group had been riding Lime scooters around the city while celebrating a friend’s birthday when the night suddenly turned deadly.

Loved ones told local media that the person responsible may have been someone Nguany trusted deeply. Family members described the suspect as “somebody he trusted, somebody he called a friend.” Police have not officially confirmed that detail, and no arrests have been announced as investigators continue working the case.
For relatives and friends, the pain has been overwhelming. Family members said Nguany’s name meant “a powerful God,” and they believe he had a bright future ahead of him. Just days earlier, he had celebrated graduating from high school and was preparing for the next chapter of his life.
Those who knew him described him as kind, respectful, and full of energy. His sudden death has shaken not only his family but also members of the Grand Rapids community and classmates who are struggling to process the tragedy.
Grand Rapids police continue investigating the stabbing and are urging anyone with information to come forward. Detectives are asking community members who may have seen anything near the southwest side location around midnight to help investigators piece together exactly what happened.
Meanwhile, supporters have started a GoFundMe campaign titled “Support for Gattie Nguany’s family” to help cover funeral expenses and other costs following the teen’s death. Friends and relatives say the support from the community has brought comfort during one of the hardest moments the family has ever faced.
