The quiet Pullman neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side was shaken over the weekend after a tragic accident claimed the life of 2-year-old Jamonte Shaw. Police said the little boy suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside a home Saturday afternoon, leaving his family devastated and a community searching for answers.
Authorities said the shooting happened around 12:40 p.m. inside a residence in the 900 block of East 104th Street. Emergency crews rushed to the scene after reports came in about a child being shot. Officers arrived to find Jamonte critically injured with a gunshot wound to the head.

The toddler was quickly taken to Comer Children’s Hospital as doctors fought to save his life. Despite their efforts, Jamonte later died from his injuries. The Cook County medical examiner’s office confirmed the young boy’s death shortly afterward.
In the middle of the grief, Jamonte’s mother, Jada Shaw, turned to the public for support by launching a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral and memorial expenses. In an emotional message shared on the fundraiser page, she described the unbearable pain of losing her son so suddenly.
“The sudden loss of my 2-year-old, Jamonte, has left me heartbroken and facing unexpected financial hardship,” she wrote. “As I try to navigate this painful time, I am struggling to cover the costs associated with his memorial and saying goodbye.”
Friends, neighbors, and supporters quickly began sharing condolences online as news of the tragedy spread across Chicago. Many described the situation as every parent’s worst nightmare, while others called for stronger gun safety measures to keep firearms away from children.
Police said a 31-year-old man identified as Jamonte’s father was taken into custody while Area Two detectives investigated the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Authorities have not publicly released additional details about how the child gained access to the weapon or whether charges will follow.
The heartbreaking death of Jamonte Shaw now adds to a growing number of accidental shootings involving children across the country. For many in the Pullman neighborhood, the tragedy serves as another painful reminder of how quickly a moment can turn into a lifelong loss for an entire family.
