Gunnar Pearson, Barnegat Bay: Memorial Day Boat Trip Turns Fatal After Violent Crash

The Memorial Day holiday ended in heartbreak for families across the Barnegat community after a boating accident on Barnegat Bay claimed the life of 28-year-old Gunnar Pearson. What began as an evening on the water quickly turned into a nightmare that left several people seriously injured and loved ones mourning a young man whose life ended far too soon.

Authorities said the crash happened around 6 p.m. Monday near the area of 63rd Street in Barnegat Bay. Investigators revealed that at least six people were riding on the boat when it suddenly slammed into a channel marker. Officials are still working to determine exactly what caused the vessel to crash.

The impact was severe enough to throw two passengers into the water. Emergency crews rushed to the scene as rescue operations unfolded across the bay. Witnesses nearby reportedly watched first responders move quickly to pull victims from the water and provide urgent medical care right there at the scene.

Gunnar Pearson suffered critical injuries in the collision. Despite desperate lifesaving efforts from emergency personnel, he later died from those injuries. New Jersey State Police later confirmed his identity as the victim killed in the crash.

Another passenger who was thrown from the boat remains in critical condition. Four others aboard the vessel were also hurt and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Officials have not publicly released additional details about the victims as families continue dealing with the emotional aftermath of the tragedy.

As word of Gunnar’s death spread, social media quickly filled with messages from grieving friends and loved ones. Many described him as someone who brought laughter, kindness, and comfort wherever he went. Friends said he had a warm personality that made people feel welcome around him, and they are struggling to understand how someone so full of life could be gone so suddenly.

For many in Barnegat, the tragedy has cast a dark shadow over what is usually one of the busiest and happiest weekends of the year. Memorial Day gatherings and celebrations instead became moments of grief as the community tried to process the devastating loss.

Investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the crash, including what may have caused the boat to strike the channel marker. While authorities search for answers, those closest to Gunnar Pearson are focused on remembering the 28 years he spent making an impact on the people around him and the painful emptiness left behind after his sudden death.
