The quiet morning gathering at Canterbury Park in Shakopee turned into a heartbreaking crime scene after 26-year-old Khalid Abdi was shot and killed outside an Eid prayer service on Wednesday morning.
Police said officers responded around 9:55 a.m. to reports of a weapons complaint at the Canterbury Park Expo Center, where hundreds had gathered for prayers marking the Islamic holiday. When officers arrived, they found Abdi suffering from multiple gunshot wounds outside the event center.

Emergency crews rushed him to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. Despite efforts to save him, Abdi later died from his injuries, according to investigators.
Authorities said Abdi had attended the prayer service before the shooting happened outside the venue. As news spread through the Somali and Muslim communities across Minnesota, many were left stunned that violence had erupted during what was supposed to be a peaceful spiritual gathering.
By Wednesday afternoon, no arrests had been announced. Investigators said they were still working to identify everyone involved and piece together exactly what led up to the deadly shooting. Police are asking anyone with information to come forward as the investigation continues.
Friends, coworkers and community members described Abdi as a deeply respected man who spent much of his time helping others. Many remembered him as a committed husband, a loving son and a passionate organizer who worked closely with labor groups and community programs across the area.
His death has also left major concern for his growing family. Loved ones said Abdi’s wife is pregnant, adding another layer of grief to an already devastating situation. A fundraising campaign was quickly launched to help cover funeral costs and support the family during the difficult weeks ahead.
People who knew Abdi said his presence carried weight in the community because he always showed up for others during hard times. Now, many are struggling to understand how someone described as peaceful and caring lost his life in such a sudden act of violence outside a place of worship.
Investigators continue asking witnesses or anyone with details about the shooting to contact Shakopee police as the city searches for answers in a case that has shaken residents across the region.
