GRAND RAPIDS Home Shooting: Jacqueline Neill and Sons Killed, Suspect Charged With Murder

Grand Rapids — In a quiet southeast neighborhood, a family was torn apart in an early‑morning shooting that left a mother and her two teenage sons dead, and a suspect now facing murder charges. Jacqueline Neill, 44, 15‑year‑old Cameron Kilpatrick, and 13‑year‑old Michael Kilpatrick were found fatally shot inside their Worden Street home just before 8 a.m. on January 27. The community is still reeling from the tragedy.

Police say Charles Broomfield, 44, has been charged with three counts of first‑degree murder and related firearm charges in connection with the killings. Court records show he was booked into the Kent County Jail without bond, and prosecutors have not yet announced his next court date.

Neighbors reported hearing several gunshots before calling 911, and officers arriving at the scene found the three victims inside the home. Officials have described the incident as a “pure homicide” but have not released a motive. Authorities urged the public not to speculate while the investigation continues.

Inside the home at the time was the family’s five‑year‑old child, who was not physically harmed. Police confirmed the young child is now safe, though details about who is caring for him have not been shared out of concern for privacy and safety.

Family members released a statement through local media, expressing deep grief over the loss. They described Jacqueline, Cameron, and Michael as loving, cherished, and central to their lives. The statement thanked the Grand Rapids Police Department for their professionalism and the community for its support during “our darkest hour.”

Leaders in Grand Rapids have also spoken out, offering condolences and support for services to help friends, neighbors, and classmates process the shock. The double loss of two students and their mother has hit local schools particularly hard, prompting outreach from counselors and crisis teams.

As the case moves through the legal system, investigators continue to gather evidence and review what led up to the shooting. Police are encouraging anyone with information to come forward, and more details may be released as the situation unfolds.
