The Watkins community is grieving the loss of 18-year-old Cameron Mertens after a tragic drowning on Pleasant Lake in Corinna Township on the evening of June 1, 2026.
According to authorities, the incident unfolded around 8:18 p.m. when emergency responders were called to Pleasant Lake following reports of a possible drowning near the public access and dock on the lake’s north side. Deputies arriving at the scene found an overturned kayak close to the shoreline.

Investigators said Cameron had been fishing alone from a kayak roughly 75 to 100 yards away from the dock when he unexpectedly fell into the water. Witnesses nearby reportedly saw him go into the lake, triggering immediate concern among those gathered around the area.
Several people had been fishing near the shoreline when the incident occurred. As word spread that Cameron had not resurfaced, emergency crews quickly launched a search operation in hopes of finding him.
The Wright County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team conducted an extensive search of the lake. After searching the water, team members eventually located and recovered Cameron. Sadly, despite the efforts made to find and assist him, he was pronounced dead.
