Myerstown, Pennsylvania — Early Wednesday morning, a man identified as John McDowell, 47, died after a confrontation with Pennsylvania State Police officers who were serving a search warrant tied to a child pornography investigation at his home on Gable Drive in Jackson Township, authorities confirmed.
Around 6 a.m., state troopers arrived at the quiet residential block as part of an ongoing probe. When officers entered the home to execute the warrant, McDowell confronted them, prompting troopers to discharge their firearms. McDowell was pronounced dead at the scene shortly afterward by the Lebanon County Coroner’s Office.

Officials have not yet disclosed whether McDowell was armed at the moment of the confrontation, and the exact cause and manner of his death remain pending further autopsy results. Authorities described the situation as isolated and assured neighbors that no ongoing threat exists to the community.
State troopers involved in the shooting were not injured. Pennsylvania State Police said all officers were wearing protective gear and that preliminary information suggests they acted in line with departmental training and usage‑of‑force protocols.
The Pennsylvania State Police Major Case Team, with assistance from the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General, is leading the investigation. Detectives will examine physical evidence, body‑worn camera footage, witness statements, and forensic findings to piece together the full sequence of events that morning.
Neighbors in the area described a heavy law enforcement presence as crime scene tape and patrol vehicles lined the street following the incident. Residents expressed shock that such a violent confrontation unfolded in their typically peaceful neighborhood.
Officials urge anyone with information relevant to the case to contact the Pennsylvania State Police. More details, including findings from the ongoing investigations, will be released as they become available and appropriate to share.
