A quiet evening in the Town of Russell turned tragic when 72-year-old Norman Rafter lost his life in a serious ATV crash on Cassidy Road in St. Lawrence County, New York.
According to authorities, emergency crews were called to the scene Tuesday night after reports of a four-wheeler crash involving a Can-Am Outlander ATV. Deputies, firefighters, and rescue personnel quickly responded to the rural roadway in an effort to help the victim.
When first responders arrived, they found Rafter unconscious and trapped beneath the overturned ATV. The vehicle had rolled over after leaving the roadway, leaving its operator pinned underneath the heavy machine.
Investigators said Rafter had been operating a 2018 Can-Am Outlander when the ATV traveled off Cassidy Road, struck a tree, and overturned. Emergency personnel removed him from beneath the vehicle and immediately attempted lifesaving measures.
Despite those efforts, Rafter was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident has left family members, friends, and members of the Russell community mourning the sudden loss of a longtime resident.
Authorities have not said how long the ATV remained overturned before it was discovered. Officials also have not indicated whether anyone witnessed the crash or was nearby when it happened.
Many questions remain unanswered. Investigators have not released information regarding possible contributing factors such as speed, visibility, weather conditions, mechanical issues, or a medical emergency.
