JEANERETTE, La.: Teen Jailon Rhine Dies After Head-On Crash on Hwy. 674

JEANERETTE, Louisiana — A tight-knit community is grieving the loss of one of its young sons after an early morning crash turned deadly on a rural Iberia Parish road. Eighteen-year-old Jailon Rhine died from injuries suffered in a head-on collision just before midnight Wednesday on Louisiana Highway 674 near Cherri Lane.

Rhine was behind the wheel of his 2013 Cadillac XTS, heading east on the two-lane highway when his car smashed into the front of a westbound 2015 Ford F-350 for reasons that remain under investigation by Louisiana State Police. Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts, authorities said.

First responders rushed Jailon to a local hospital after the crash, but he later died from his injuries. The driver of the Ford was also seriously injured and taken to a hospital for treatment. Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I collected standard toxicology samples from both drivers as part of the ongoing investigation.

Friends and neighbors are struggling to make sense of the tragedy. Jailon was known around town as a young man full of enthusiasm, quick with a laugh and always ready to lend a hand. His energy and warmth made him a familiar face at community events and among his peers in Jeanerette.

In the wake of his passing, family members have struggled with a deep sense of loss that echoes through local schools, churches and homes. People who knew him describe a kid with a bright smile and a future full of promise, now remembered in stories shared at memorials and gatherings.

Local leaders and residents have rallied around Rhine’s family, offering support and prayers in this painful time. A candlelight vigil was held Thursday evening near his neighborhood, where neighbors placed flowers, photos and handwritten notes in his memory.

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging everyone who drives those quiet backroads to stay alert and avoid distractions. Deaths like Jailon’s are reminders that even a few seconds of inattention can have devastating consequences.

Rhine’s life, though far too brief, left a mark on his community — a reminder of how a single young life can touch so many others. His memory now lives on in the hearts of family, friends and all who knew him in Jeanerette.
