Cobb County, Rowdy G. Hill: Traffic stop on Windy Hill Road ends in deadly crash, gunfire, and a tense police standoff

Cobb County, Georgia turned into the center of a fast-moving police incident late Friday night after a routine traffic stop spiraled into chaos and ended in a fatal shooting involving officers and an armed driver.

It began around 10:22 p.m. on June 5 when uniformed officers attempted to pull over a Cadillac SUV on Windy Hill Road. Police said the driver was moving recklessly before they activated emergency lights and sirens.

Instead of stopping, the driver kept going, leading officers on a pursuit through the area. The chase ended when the SUV lost control and flipped near a home close to Windy Hill Road and Osborne Court.

After the crash, the situation did not settle. The driver stayed inside the overturned vehicle and refused repeated police commands to come out.

Police later said the driver was armed inside the vehicle. During the standoff, a firearm was reportedly discharged from inside the SUV, and officers responded by firing their weapons.

Investigators said the driver later tried to exit the vehicle while still holding a gun. At that moment, an officer fired, striking him.

The driver, later identified by family members as Rowdy G. Hill, died from his injuries at the scene. No officers were reported injured during the incident.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case, as is standard in officer-involved shootings. The area was also secured with a heavy police presence, including tactical units responding after reports of gunfire.

Officials say the investigation is still active, and more details are expected as investigators review body camera footage, witness statements, and physical evidence.
