McCoy, Berne Township: Tragic overnight crash cuts short the life of a beloved Lancaster man.

The Lancaster community is dealing with a pretty heavy blow this week after learning about the sudden loss of Ian James McCoy. Folks around town are trying to make sense of a tragic overnight wreck that took the 36-year-old far too soon.

It all went down in the early morning hours of Wednesday, June 10, 2026, over in Berne Township. State troopers say McCoy was driving his 2013 Fiat 500 north on Horns Mill Road when things took a devastating turn.

Around 2:43 a.m., right near Raver Court, the little hatchback failed to negotiate a curve in the road. The car drifted off the asphalt, slammed hard into an embankment, and flipped right over, throwing McCoy from the driver’s seat.

First responders with the Berne Township EMS got to the scene fast and rushed him over to Fairfield Medical Center. Because his injuries were so incredibly severe, medics ended up transferring him to The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, but doctors just couldn’t save him.

Now, the people who knew and loved Ian are left with an immeasurable void in their hearts. At just 36, he had so much life ahead of him, full of everyday moments and close relationships that his family is clinging to right now.

Local authorities did mention that they suspect alcohol played a role in the crash, and they noted that McCoy wasn’t wearing a safety belt when the car flipped. It’s a harsh detail in an already heartbreaking situation, and the Ohio State Highway Patrol is still looking into the whole thing.

Even with those tough details coming out, the focus for locals is entirely on supporting the family. Neighbors and old friends are gathering to share stories of laughter and regular conversations, trying to find a bit of comfort while praying for Ian to rest in peace.
