It was supposed to be just another fun summer weekend for a group of local teens. Instead, a quick trip to a popular swimming spot cut a young life short and left a family completely broken. Eighteen-year-old Austin Shyjuan Washington went out to enjoy the water but never made it back home.
Austin was a sweet kid from Lincolnton who always knew how to make the people around him feel good. His mom remembers him as a truly wonderful son. He was deeply caring, loving, and had a handsome smile that brought constant joy to his family.

On Saturday evening, Austin and his buddies headed out to the lake to beat the heat. They gathered near a well-known rock face on the west side of the dam. It is a place where young people always go to hang out and swim when the weather gets warm.
Things went wrong in a split second around 6:30 p.m. Austin jumped into the water near the rocks, right by the water intake structure. He sank beneath the surface and simply did not come back up.
His friends watched in absolute horror as the seconds turned into minutes. They realized something was terribly wrong and dialed 911 for help. Within minutes, emergency vehicles were flying down the local roads with their sirens blaring.
A massive rescue operation kicked into gear as the sun started going down. Multiple rescue teams launched boats and dive crews into the deep water to find the missing teen. Everyone on the shore kept praying for a miracle as night began to fall.
The heartbreaking end came just after 9 p.m. when search crews finally located Austin’s body. He was pronounced dead right there at the scene. Now, his family faces a mountain of unexpected funeral costs, and the community is wrapping its arms around a grieving mother who lost her boy way too soon.
