Birmingham Jail: Tyeshia Hutchins, 47, Found Unresponsive and Dies in Custody

Birmingham — The Birmingham community is reeling after the sudden death of Tyeshia Jann Hutchins, 47, who was found unresponsive inside the Birmingham City Jail on the morning of January 28, 2026 and later pronounced dead.

Hutchins, a longtime Birmingham resident known for her warm presence in local circles, was discovered in her private cell by jail staff at 10:53 a.m. She was pronounced dead by 11:05 a.m. despite efforts to revive her. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office confirmed her age and identity, and said that initial examinations showed no obvious trauma or signs of violence. Pathologists are still waiting on lab results to determine the official cause of death.

She had been booked into the city jail just over a week earlier, on January 20, on a disorderly conduct charge. There was no indication at the time of any serious health issues, friends and family said, making the loss particularly shocking. Jail officials, alongside the Birmingham Police Department, have said they are investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.

Friends, relatives, and neighbors described Hutchins as someone who lit up gatherings with her laughter and cared deeply about her community. “She was the kind of person who always asked how you were doing and really listened,” said one close friend. “It feels unreal that she’s gone this way.” Her passing is stirring a wave of grief and disbelief across Birmingham.

Hutchins’ family has been receiving an outpouring of support from all corners of the city. Community leaders have called for compassion and calm as authorities complete their review of what happened at the jail. Some advocates for jail reform point to this and other recent in‑custody deaths as reasons to push for better medical attention and oversight.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office said autopsy results so far show no evidence of foul play or physical injury, but final toxicology and deeper forensic analyses are pending before a cause of death is released. Family members said they hope that information will bring clarity and some peace in a dark time.

As the community mourns, many are remembering Hutchins for the simple joy she brought into people’s lives. A life ended too soon, her story is settling into conversations from neighborhood porches to social media feeds, reminding folks of life’s fragile nature and the love we hold for those gone too soon.
