It is incredibly tough when a young life gets cut short out of nowhere. Ethan Hillman was only 19 years old. He was a great guy from Smyrna with his whole future right ahead of him. He was just doing his job at the local hospital when the unthinkable happened. Now, an entire community is left picking up the pieces after a normal workday turned into a total nightmare.
The violence broke out on a quiet Tuesday afternoon around 3:30 p.m. It happened inside Wilmington Hospital right on West 14th Street. What started as a typical shift suddenly shattered when gunshots echoed near the cafeteria. People who were at the facility to heal and help others suddenly had to run for their lives.
The entire medical campus went into an immediate lockdown as panic spread fast through the halls. Nurses, doctors, and frightened patients barricaded themselves inside dark, windowless exam rooms. Outside, the streets quickly filled with flashing lights. SWAT teams and federal agents swarmed the area to clear the building floor by floor.
Two teenage workers were caught in the crossfire during what authorities called a targeted attack. Emergency teams and doctors rushed to save them right there on the spot. Sadly, Ethan could not overcome his severe injuries and passed away. The other 19-year-old victim managed to survive and remains in stable condition.
The shooter was actually someone they knew from around the workplace. Cops identified the suspect as 23-year-old John Wallace-Bey. He was an IT tech intern who lived nearby in New Castle. Right after the gunfire stopped, he slipped past security and fled the scene in a white SUV, sparking a massive manhunt.
Law enforcement used highway surveillance cameras to track the suspect across state lines into Pennsylvania. About six hours after the shooting, Philly police spotted him getting into an Uber. Officers pulled the sedan over and took him into custody without any further trouble.
Now, the suspect is locked up with no bail allowed while he waits to face first-degree murder charges back in Delaware. Back home, Ethan’s family and close friends are dealing with an overwhelming wave of grief. They are holding onto each other tight and remembering a bright young man taken far too soon.
