Sunday morning in Lakewood took a devastating turn before the sun even came up. What started as a peaceful weekend quickly transformed into a horrific scene that left a local neighborhood in complete shock. Families woke up to flashing police lights and a reality that no one saw coming.
At the heart of this tragedy are two people whose lives were cut incredibly short. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office identified them as 33-year-old Amanda Leigh Wakut of Lakewood and 35-year-old Richard Eastin of Cleveland. Both of them were found dead inside a home on Chesterland Avenue.

The nightmare began to unravel around 4:26 a.m. on June 21. That was when Lakewood police officers received a frantic call from a woman in distress. She told dispatchers that her ex-husband had just contacted her out of the blue. He dropped a bomb on her, claiming he had just shot two people at the house and was planning to end his own life next.
Cops rushed to the scene at 2115 Chesterland Avenue to check out the situation. As they pulled up to the neighborhood, they spotted a pickup truck tearing away from the area at a high rate of speed. Officers immediately flipped on their sirens and attempted to pull the truck over, but the driver refused to stop and stepped on the gas.
The brief but high-stakes pursuit tore through the streets before coming to a sudden halt near 1280 Warren Road. The driver slammed the brakes and jumped out of the vehicle, but he wasn’t looking to run. Instead, he held a handgun directly to his own head. Officers tried desperately to talk him down and de-escalate the situation.
The standoff lasted only about three minutes before the suspect pulled the trigger. He died right there at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities later identified him as 45-year-old Stephen Davis from nearby Fairview Park. With the suspect gone, the focus immediately shifted back to the home on Chesterland Avenue.
When officers entered the residence, they discovered the grim reality of what Davis had confessed to. Amanda Wakut and Richard Eastin were found shot to death right inside the kitchen. Paramedics pronounced both of them dead at the scene. Investigators are still working to piece together exactly what led to this senseless act of violence.
