An 18-year-old kid named Emerald Metoxen had his whole life ahead of him. That bright future vanished early Monday morning on the east side of town. A sudden burst of gunfire changed everything in an instant. Now, an entire community is mourning a truly heartbreaking loss.
People who knew Emerald loved him deeply. His friends say he brought pure joy into every room he walked into. He was a highly valued young man with a massive heart. His sudden passing has left his family completely devastated and searching for answers.

The tragedy unfolded right in the middle of the night. Local police officers rushed to the 2400 block of Deckner Avenue around 1:45 a.m. They responded fast to reports of a weapons incident. When they arrived, they found Emerald lying unresponsive right in the street.
He was suffering from a clear gunshot wound. Cop cars and emergency lights flashed in the darkness. Responding officers and medics tried desperate life-saving measures right there on the pavement. Sadly, their immediate efforts were not enough, and he died at the scene.
The nightmare did not stop with Emerald. A second victim showed up at a local hospital a short time later. This victim was a 17-year-old male with a serious gunshot wound. Doctors say his injuries are bad but he is expected to survive the night.
The entire neighborhood went into an immediate lockdown during the emergency response. Authorities ordered local residents to shelter in place for their own safety. SWAT teams and crisis negotiators flooded the area to lock things down. The scary order finally lifted around 8:30 a.m.
Detectives are still working hard to piece this puzzle together. The investigation is in its very early stages right now. No suspects are in custody yet, and the shooter remains out there. Meanwhile, Emerald’s family is leaning on each other to survive this incredible pain.
