Joselito Rivera, Greenville County: Tragic roadside argument ends with a local light taken far too soon.

The tight-knit community of Greenville County is reeling this week after a sudden burst of roadside violence stole a bright young soul from those who loved him most. Joselito Billy Leopard Rivera, known affectionately as “JoJo” to his inner circle, was found dead outside a home early Thursday morning. Loved ones are completely heartbroken, struggling to make sense of a late-night ride that turned into an absolute nightmare.

Deputies with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office rushed to the scene near Saluda Dam Road just before 2:20 a.m. after receiving several tense reports of gunfire. When they arrived, investigators found a trail of evidence linking a nearby vehicle to the shooting. JoJo was discovered just outside a residence at 421 Saluda Dam Road, where emergency responders could do nothing to save him.

Detectives believe the tragedy kicked off while JoJo was riding around with a group of people inside that same vehicle. At some point during the drive, an argument broke out between the passengers and quickly spiraled out of control. What started as a simple disagreement escalated into deadly gunfire right there on the shoulder of the road, leaving JoJo behind.

Law enforcement moved fast, locking down a suspect within mere hours of the initial 911 calls. Authorities arrested 20-year-old James Emanuel Waiters III and hit him with heavy charges, including murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Another person in the car, who was behind the wheel at the time of the altercation, has not been charged as detectives continue to sort through the details.

As news of the shooting spread through South Carolina, an overwhelming wave of grief washed over JoJo’s family and friends. Social media quickly filled up with emotional tributes, old photographs, and deep prayers for a young man who always brought a smile to people’s faces. Those closest to JoJo remember him as a guy whose sheer presence brought instant light and laughter into any room he walked into.

Right now, the neighborhood is leaning heavily on each other to find some semblance of comfort during an incredibly dark time. Neighbors have expressed a deep sense of sadness and growing concern over the sudden spike of violence on their local roads. Everyone is trying to focus on holding JoJo’s family close while the legal process begins to play out.

In the coming days, community members plan to hold vigils and memorial gatherings to honor JoJo’s legacy and celebrate the life he lived. Law enforcement is still actively working the case to make sure every piece of the puzzle is put together properly. They are urging anyone who might have heard or seen something strange along Saluda Dam Road that night to step forward and speak up.
