Jeremy “Ryan” Lambert was only 16 years old. To his teachers, he was the exceptionally polite sophomore at Alexandria High School who always had a kind word for everyone. To his teammates, he was a fierce leader with an infectious smile. To the rest of the state of Alabama, he was a back-to-back high school wrestling champion who seemed entirely unstoppable on the mat.
Everything changed around 10 p.m. on Friday. State troopers say Lambert was driving a 2007 Jeep Cherokee on Vineyard Road, near Lowimoore Road, about six miles east of Ohatchee. For reasons investigators are still trying to piece together, the vehicle suddenly veered off the asphalt, hit an embankment, and flipped over.
The impact was severe. State law enforcement officials confirmed that the teenager was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision and was thrown from the vehicle as it overturned. Emergency responders rushed him to a local hospital, but the injuries were simply too critical. Despite every effort to save his life, the young athlete passed away.
Now, the grief in Calhoun County is thick enough to cut with a knife. It was only back in February that Lambert was standing tall at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, celebrating a massive 15-2 major decision to secure his latest state title. He brought so much pride to his school, but those who knew him best say his medals didn’t even scratch the surface of who he was.
