Nick Fereira went out on a typical Tuesday afternoon, never expecting it would be his last. The 35-year-old sheet metal worker was just spending time at a familiar shopping plaza when everything went sideways. Within moments, a violent encounter shattered the peace of a quiet suburban community and left a local family completely broken.
The gunfire erupted shortly after 3:30 p.m. at the Shops at Highland Commons. The busy shopping center sits right on the town line between Berlin and Hudson. Shoppers went from running everyday errands to running for cover as multiple gunshots suddenly rang out near a row of local businesses.

Berlin police officers rushed to the scene following frantic reports of an assault in progress. When they arrived, they found Fereira on the ground suffering from multiple serious gunshot wounds. First responders from several neighboring towns tried everything they could to save him right there in the parking lot.
Despite the best efforts of police officers, firefighters, and medical crews, Fereira could not be saved. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The sudden tragedy left onlookers shocked by how quickly a regular afternoon turned into a horrific nightmare.
The next day, devastated family members publicly identified the victim as Nick Fereira. They shared their deep grief over losing a loving family man who was simply going about his day. Authorities later revealed that Fereira actually knew the person who shot him, making the targeted attack even more heartbreaking for those left behind.
While medical crews were working on Fereira, an alert witness decided to take action. The bystander followed the shooter’s silver pickup truck as it sped away from the plaza and hopped onto Interstate 495. The witness stayed on the line with Massachusetts State Police, giving troopers the exact location of the fleeing suspect.
Thanks to that quick-thinking citizen, state troopers managed to track down and corner the suspect’s truck in the highway median near Lowell. The dramatic standoff completely shut down the highway during the busy evening commute. It finally ended when tactical teams entered the vehicle and found the suspect dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, leaving Fereira’s family looking for answers.
