Kevin Chown was a regular guy from Escanaba, Michigan who just happened to play the bass guitar better than almost anyone else on the planet. Sadly, his long musical journey came to an end on Monday, July 6, 2026. Kevin passed away peacefully at his home after a private battle with cancer. He was only 56 years old.
Growing up in the rural Upper Peninsula, music was practically in Kevin’s blood from day one. His dad taught the high school band and his mom gave private piano lessons right at home. He originally started out banging on the drums as a kid. Everything changed the moment he heard Led Zeppelin and switched over to the bass guitar.
By the time he turned 15, Kevin was already playing gigs with a popular local rock band called Tyrant. He loved his hometown but eventually packed his bags to study jazz at Wayne State University in Detroit. He even won a major award as college jazz soloist of the year before taking off to conquer Los Angeles for 25 years.
Even when he was touring the globe and playing for massive crowds, Kevin never lost his small-town charm. The rock and roll world can change a person, but friends say Kevin stayed exactly the same. He was always the guy who would look you in the eye, listen to your story, and offer a word of support.
His quiet battle with cancer showed the exact same grit he displayed on stage for decades. He did not want a big fuss or a public spectacle while he was dealing with his illness. Instead, he chose to come back to Michigan to be near the things and people he loved the most during his final days.
Folks back home in Escanaba are taking the news hard because Kevin made the community incredibly proud. He proved that a kid from a rural town could make it to the biggest stages in Europe and America. Yet every time he came back around, he was just Kevin, the friendly neighbor who loved to chat.
Funeral services are being handled by local funeral homes later this July, and the family is holding onto precious memories. His physical journey is over, but the deep grooves he left behind will never fade away. He leaves a massive void in the hearts of his family, friends, and everyone who loved his gentle soul.
