Saint James, Long Island — A quiet Saturday morning turned into heartbreak when Nassau County Police Officer Patricia Espinosa, 42, was killed in a violent crash caused by a suspected drunk driver, authorities confirmed. The collision happened just after 6:06 a.m. Saturday on Route 347 at the intersection with Alexander Avenue, a busy stretch near the Smith Haven Mall.
Espinosa was driving her 2019 Alfa Romeo westbound on Route 347 when a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by 20-year-old Matthew Smith of Hauppauge, blew through a red light and struck her vehicle head-on. Suffolk County Police say Smith was heading north on Alexander Avenue and failed to stop before the collision.

Emergency crews rushed Officer Espinosa to Stony Brook University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The impact was devastating, cutting short the life of a dedicated officer, wife, sister, and mother. Smith and his 25-year-old passenger, John Andali of Centereach, were also taken to the hospital with injuries authorities say are not life-threatening.
Smith was charged with Driving While Intoxicated in connection with the crash. Both vehicles have been impounded as Suffolk County detectives continue a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, including reviewing traffic camera footage and witness statements.
Words of grief and respect poured in from local leaders and fellow officers. Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman said he was “heartbroken” over Espinosa’s death and ordered flags at county buildings to be flown at half-staff through her funeral. Her union, the Nassau County Police Benevolent Association, called her loss “a profound and senseless tragedy” and highlighted her courage, compassion, and commitment to protecting the community.
Friends and colleagues described Espinosa as the heart of a law enforcement family. She leaves behind her husband, Police Officer Francisco Malaga, her brothers Christian and David Almeida — also officers — and a two-year-old daughter, Mia. Many in the community took to social media to share memories of her kindness, professionalism, and devotion to service.
Police are urging anyone who may have information about the early-morning crash to contact the Suffolk County Police Major Case Unit. The tragic loss of Officer Espinosa is a sobering reminder of the dangers posed by impaired driving, and authorities continue to stress the importance of reporting unsafe drivers before another life is lost.
