Mount Pleasant woke up to heartbreak early Sunday after a deadly crash claimed the life of 30-year-old Tanner Johnson, a young man whose night ended far too soon on a familiar stretch of road.
The fatal collision happened around 1:01 a.m. at the intersection of North Highway 17 and Bowman Road, one of the town’s busiest crossings, even in the quiet hours before dawn. The area is well known to locals who travel it daily, making the loss feel especially close to home.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene moments after the crash was reported. When they arrived, they found Johnson unresponsive. Despite immediate lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of his injuries.
Charleston County Coroner Bobbi Jo O’Neal later identified Johnson as the victim. Officials confirmed he died as a direct result of the crash. No other injuries were reported, and details about how many vehicles were involved have not yet been released.
Investigators have also not said what caused the crash. There has been no word on speed, impairment, or mechanical issues. For now, those questions remain unanswered as officers carefully piece together what happened in the moments leading up to the collision.
The Mount Pleasant Police Department is actively investigating. Officers are reviewing evidence from the scene, including vehicle damage and road conditions, to understand how the crash unfolded and whether any contributing factors were at play.
Johnson’s death has left family and friends grieving a life cut short without warning. In a town where faces are familiar and roads are shared, the loss has struck a quiet but heavy chord.
Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has information that could help the investigation to contact the Mount Pleasant Police Department. More details are expected as the investigation continues.
