Whiteford Township Crash Kills 60‑Year‑Old Ottawa Lake Woman, Injures Two Young People

Whiteford Township, Michigan — A quiet community was shaken on the evening of Valentine’s Day when a head‑on collision on US‑23 claimed the life of a local woman and left two young people seriously hurt. What began as an ordinary Sunday night turned into a scene of tragedy just south of Sterns Road.

Shortly before 10 p.m. on February 14, 60‑year‑old Rhonda L. Bartnik of Ottawa Lake was driving a blue 2017 Ford Escape southbound when she inexplicably veered into the northbound left lane. There, her SUV collided head‑on with a gray 2023 Ford F‑150 driven by 18‑year‑old Calvin A. Campbell of Dundee. A 17‑year‑old female passenger was also in the pickup.

Emergency crews arrived quickly and found both vehicles stopped in the northbound left lane with airbags deployed. All occupants had been wearing seat belts. Despite life‑saving efforts, Ms. Bartnik was pronounced dead at the scene. Her loss has left family and neighbors struggling to come to terms with the sudden end of a life described by many as kind, generous, and deeply rooted in her community.

Campbell and his teenage passenger were rushed to ProMedica Toledo Hospital in Ohio with serious injuries. Hospital staff reported both remain in intensive care, and their families are focused on their recovery. The emotional shock rippled through friends, schoolmates, and extended family members who knew them.

Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough said preliminary investigation points to careless driving as a contributing factor. Investigators are working to determine exactly how Ms. Bartnik came to be traveling the wrong direction in the northbound lanes. Lieutenant Brian Quinn and deputies Alec Preadmore and Steven Warren are leading the active investigation, which continues to unfold.

First responders from the Whiteford Township Fire Department, Monroe Community Ambulance, and the Sheriff’s Office offered assistance at the scene, helping comfort those involved and directing traffic on the busy highway. In the hours that followed, the long stretch of US‑23 was quiet except for flashing lights and the slow hum of investigation.

In Ottawa Lake and surrounding communities, people are holding onto memories of Ms. Bartnik — a mother, neighbor, and friend. Those closest to her speak of her strength, her willingness to help others, and her deep care for family and community. Her passing has left a void that friends say cannot be measured but will be felt for years.

As families cope and investigators seek answers, the crash serves as a somber reminder of how quickly life can change on the road. Attention to driving, awareness of surroundings, and care for others remain urgent messages for all who travel these highways.
