GADSDEN Investigation Focuses on Early-Morning Wreck That Took Life of Elkmont Driver

Gadsden became the setting for a somber investigation after a single-vehicle crash early Sunday killed a 65-year-old woman and sent two others to the hospital. Just before 6 a.m. on February 15, emergency crews responded to a call on Riverview Drive near Tillison Road when a lone truck veered off the road, smashed a fence and ended up in a nearby pond.

The victim, identified as Elkmont resident Kathy N. Hamilton, was behind the wheel of a 2000 GMC 1500 when the wreck happened. Authorities say she was killed in the crash and pronounced dead at the scene. Friends and community members remember Hamilton as dependable and genuine — the sort of person whose absence is deeply felt.

In the front seat and passenger seat with Hamilton were 30-year-old Hali B. Bridges and 29-year-old Chance B. Bridges. Both were injured during the incident and taken to Gadsden Regional Medical Center for treatment. Officials have not revealed details about the severity of their injuries or their progress since being admitted.

Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Highway Patrol Division have been combing the crash site and interviewing witnesses as part of their ongoing investigation. They are looking at everything from the truck’s speed to the lighting and visibility on Riverview Drive just before the wreck. So far, no single cause — such as excessive speed or weather — has been confirmed.

Locals who live near the scene say Riverview Drive can be tricky just as the sun rises. The road is narrow in places, and shadows cast by surrounding trees can hide potholes or dips in the pavement. Some residents tell reporters they plan to press city officials for clearer signage or better lighting after this latest incident.

Hamilton’s passing has left a void in the small community where she lived. Neighbors describe her as the person who stopped to help others without hesitation and who was always ready to lend an ear. Her sudden death has prompted an outpouring of memories and quiet reflection among those who crossed her path.

While investigators work to determine exactly what went wrong that morning, authorities are urging drivers everywhere to slow down and be extra vigilant in the dawn hours. With limited daylight and shifting temperatures, roads can become deceptive. For now, officials say they will share more details as they become available, and the community continues to mourn the loss of one of its own.
