Jacksonville saw a deadly shooting unfold on West Chambers Street just after 5:40 p.m. Saturday, when officers responded to calls about gunfire in the 800 block. They found 31-year-old Marcquila Harris shot and gravely wounded. She was taken to Jacksonville Memorial Hospital, where she died later that evening.
Police immediately began canvassing the area, collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses. By late Sunday afternoon, Jacksonville law enforcement had arrested 23-year-old Marissa Teubner of Jacksonville. Teubner is accused of first-degree homicide and aggravated discharge of a firearm in connection with Harris’s death.
Investigators described the arrest as the result of close collaboration between local police, state crime technicians and the county sheriff’s office. Teubner is being held at the Morgan County Jail pending formal court proceedings.
Officials have been tight-lipped about the specifics of what triggered the incident, calling it an isolated event while the investigation continues. An autopsy for Harris was scheduled to better determine the details of her injuries.
Residents of the neighborhood said they were stunned by the violence in a place they usually consider calm. Some spoke of Harris as a familiar face in the community, someone whose sudden death has left a void that won’t quickly be filled.
Family members have not publicly spoken, but friends have shared their grief privately, underscoring the personal toll such loss takes beyond the headlines and legal filings.
Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact police or Crimestoppers, hoping to fill any remaining gaps in the timeline and motive. As the case proceeds through the legal system, Jacksonville is left to reckon with the emotional aftermath of a life cut short.
The arrest has at least given some a sense that justice is moving forward, even as questions remain about what led to the tragic Saturday evening shooting.
