In the early hours of Sunday, a routine delivery turned into a fatal disaster on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel in Northampton County, Virginia. Ronnie Andrews, 61, a tractor-trailer driver from Robersonville, North Carolina, lost his life when his truck went over the side of the bridge.
Authorities say the crash occurred around 6:30 a.m. near the North Channel Bridge on the southbound span, just south of Fisherman Island. The tractor-trailer went off the west side of the bridge. First responders rushed to the scene, but Andrews did not survive.

Investigators confirmed it was a single-vehicle crash. Weather conditions were stable, with low winds, no rain, and clear visibility. Officials have not yet determined what caused the truck to leave the roadway. The investigation remains active.
Perdue Farms later confirmed Andrews was one of their employees. In a statement, the company said it was deeply saddened by the loss. Leaders described being heartbroken and offered sympathy to his loved ones and coworkers. They also stated they are assisting authorities as the investigation continues.
The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel is known for its long spans over open water. For commercial drivers, it is a critical route linking communities and supporting daily commerce. Sunday’s incident brought traffic to a halt and left many stunned by the suddenness of it all.
Those who worked alongside Andrews are now grieving not just a colleague, but a man they shared early mornings and long miles with. His passing has cast a heavy shadow over both his company and his hometown.
As investigators piece together what happened in those early minutes of the day, one fact remains clear. A family in Robersonville is mourning a father, friend, and hardworking man whose journey ended far too soon.
