Edwardsville Police Chase Ends in Fatal Main Street Crash, Business Destroyed

A police pursuit in Edwardsville late Sunday led to a deadly crash that tore through the front of a downtown business and claimed the life of a young man. Shortly after 11 p.m., officers from the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Police Department spotted a Chevrolet pickup driving unsafely on New Poag Road and later the wrong way on Northern Access Road. When the driver failed to stop, the pursuit moved into the city.

The truck barreled down city streets before the driver lost control near South Main Street. The vehicle smashed into the Redmon Insurance Agency building at 106 South Main, scattering bricks and causing significant structural damage. Responding crews found the driver, identified as Ryan C. Drew, unconscious and unresponsive. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Police confirmed no officers were injured during the chase or crash. The Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation is taking the lead in the case, gathering evidence to understand exactly what happened in the moments before the collision. Officials say intoxication, mechanical failure or other contributing factors have not been ruled out.

The collision left a stark mark on the historic business district. The Redmon Insurance building lost much of its front wall, and nearby businesses reported shaken windows and disrupted operations the following day. Owner Kai Redmon said he was “thankful no one was inside” when the crash happened and that his team is working out of the company’s Collinsville office while repairs are planned.

Clean‑up efforts began in the early morning hours, with crews using heavy equipment to remove debris and stabilize damaged walls. Residents and business owners gathered to watch as workers methodically cleared the scene and reopened sections of the street. Main Street traffic remains altered as contractors assess long‑term repairs.

Neighbors described hearing the sirens and then a loud impact just before midnight. Several people said they came outside to see police lights and construction crews already at work. Local officials praised the quick response from Edwardsville fire, police and state investigators who coordinated efforts to secure the area and begin the investigation.

Despite the destruction to property, community leaders have emphasized gratitude that bystanders were not injured. Witnesses say the crash could have been far worse if it had occurred moments earlier or during a busier time. Conversations in local cafes and social media posts reflected concern for safety and questions about how to prevent similar incidents in the future.

As the state police investigation continues, city officials are calling for patience and cooperation from the public. They say findings from the probe will be shared once available and that measures to improve road safety and police response protocols are under review. In the meanwhile, the downtown community is rallying around the family of the driver and the affected business owners with support and offers of assistance.
