The quiet stretch of Maine Street in Mifflin turned somber Wednesday evening when 26-year-old Brandon Sheaffer was found unresponsive inside a residence. What began as a routine emergency call quickly became a death investigation now drawing the attention of multiple agencies across Ashland County.
Emergency crews were dispatched around 5:04 p.m. on Feb. 19 to 39 Maine Street after a report of an unresponsive person. Deputies from the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office responded alongside the Mifflin Township Fire Department and the Mifflin Village Police Department. The scene unfolded inside the home, where first responders discovered Sheaffer lying unconscious on the floor.
Medics immediately began life-saving efforts. Despite those attempts, Sheaffer was pronounced dead at the scene. The news sent a ripple of concern through the small community, where incidents like this are rare and deeply felt.
The Ashland County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the circumstances surrounding Sheaffer’s death remain under active investigation. Detectives have not released details about what may have led to the emergency call or what responders observed inside the home.
Investigators from the Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification joined local authorities at the scene. The Ashland County Coroner’s Office is also assisting, though as of Thursday, no official cause of death had been determined. That unanswered question now sits at the center of the case.
Sheriff Kurt J. Schneider said there are no immediate safety concerns for residents. Still, detectives continue interviewing witnesses and carefully reviewing evidence collected from the residence. Officials appear to be taking a methodical approach, working step by step to piece together what happened in those final moments.
Authorities are urging anyone with information that could help clarify the timeline or circumstances to contact the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau. For now, a young man’s life has ended, and a close-knit Ohio village waits for answers.
